                                                            History and Functions

The Altar and Rosary Society is composed of women from the parish who dedicate their service to the glory of God here at St. Lucy’s Church. They are committed and involved in the spiritual and social life of our parish.

The Altar and Rosary Society can trace its roots back to the first days of the parish shortly after it was officially established in 1899. The Society has as its purpose to promote Christian life, virtue, and service. The Society fosters the spiritual development of its members and provides opportunities for friendship and community spirit through religious, social, cultural, and educational programs and events.

The Society assists in developing the spiritual life of its members and the parish by promoting devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, attendance at Mass, devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and praying the Rosary. The Society further supports the spiritual life of its members by holding days of recollection, retreats, pilgrimages, and various devotions. Recent pilgrimages were made to the tomb of St. Francis Xavier Cabrini (who helped to organize our parish) and to the tomb of St. John Neumann. The Society cares for and maintains the Altar and the sanctuary and its appointments.

The Society is an integral part of the social life of the parish; especially planning our annual feast day reception on December 13th  in honor of St. Lucy, our patron saint. The Society plays a vital role in our many other parish activities.

Currently, the Altar and Rosary Society has over 130 members.

Some of the objectives of the Society are:

* To promote frequent attendance at Mass, recitation of the Rosary, and assist the Pastor in spiritual and religious undertakings for the welfare of the parish and community

* To unite all women of St. Lucy’s Parish in religious and social activities, to promote true Christian charity, love of God, and the practice of Christian virtue

* To foster love for the House of God, and to labor for its proper adornment and cleanliness

* To care for the sanctuary and its appointments; altar, altar linens, vestments and other appointments

*To assist in hosting receptions for spiritual and social activities of the parish
*To furnish flowers for the altar, especially on Marian Feast Days
*To assist in parish projects such as the Annual Spaghetti Dinner and other fundraising activities

* As a society, to be part of the Diocesan and National Council of Catholic Women

Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,

that never was it known

that any one who fled to thy protection,

implored thy help or sought thy intercession,

was left unaided.

Inspired with this confidence,

I fly unto thee,

O Virgin of virgins my Mother;

to thee do I come,

before thee I stand,

sinful and sorrowful;

O Mother of the Word Incarnate,

despise not my petitions,

but in thy clemency hear and answer me.

Amen.
